Advancements in dental technology now allow us to save deeply decayed and damaged teeth; however, there are some cases when tooth extraction is inevitable. At the office of Washington Dental Care, we understand that extractions may not be the most pleasant dental procedures to go through, but we make sure that the process is comfortable and virtually painless for you, by making use of oral sedation and local anesthesia.
An extraction may need to be performed for several reasons - when a tooth is beyond the point when it can be saved, or if the presence of the tooth affects the health of the other teeth in the mouth. Reasons for tooth extraction other than tooth decay include:
- Teeth damaged by trauma
- Orthodontic treatment or tooth crowding. Sometimes, some of your teeth erupt in a way which requires them to be extracted in order for the other teeth to be brought into their right alignment.
- Advanced periodontal disease could damage bones and tissue that connects the tooth with the gum. As the infection progresses, the bone weakens, and the tooth becomes loose.
- Impacted wisdom teeth
When you visit the office of Washington Dental Care, we will examine your dental health and determine the best course of treatment for you. If one of your teeth does need to be extracted, we will take an X-ray to determine the position of the tooth and the bone around it. An X-ray also helps us to ensure there are no abscesses. In case an abscess is present, it will need to be treated prior to extracting the tooth. The tooth is gently removed from its socket using dental instruments, and the site is cleaned and flushed. A piece of gauze is placed at the extraction site to control bleeding. Once the procedure is over, we will give you aftercare instructions to help the site heal.
