At Washington Dental Care, we believe strongly in the power of preventive treatments. While there are high-quality restoration and replacement options available to restore your smile, we feel that the best way to upkeep your smile is to preserve its natural health and beauty. This can be done by preventing cavities from occurring in the first place. Regular at-home and in-office hygiene procedures go a long way in preventing tooth decay, and dental sealants offer an added layer of protection to your teeth.
Dental sealants shield the biting surfaces of your molars and premolars from tooth decay by smoothing out and sealing the fissures and grooves that are hard to clean using floss or a toothbrush. A sealant is a thin, clear liquid plastic coating which is painted on the biting surfaces of the teeth (usually the molars) to prevent the occurrence of cavities. The sealant material bonds to the grooves and depressions of the teeth forming a protective layer over the enamel on each tooth. Anyone can benefit from the application of dental sealants, and they have been found to be particularly successful in preventing tooth decay in teenagers and children.
The application procedure for dental sealants is quick and painless and can be completed in a single dental appointment. The teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. An acidic etching liquid is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to roughen teeth in preparation for bonding. The liquid sealant is then applied to the enamel of the tooth where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. A dental curing light is used to help the sealant harden. If maintained properly, sealants can protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years. Regular visits to our office are required to check for chipping or wearing.
