A denture is an appliance which is used to replace missing teeth and support the surrounding oral tissues. Dentures can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth and can enhance your smile in several ways. Dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth because they fit snugly over your gums. They help you eat with ease and speak clearly and will help boost your confidence. It is not advised to leave gaps between your teeth if you have lost some of your teeth as your other teeth may shift into the space. This can result in crooked teeth which will eventually affect your teeth functions such as biting and chewing and can damage your other teeth.
Traditional Dentures (Full and Partial):
Traditional dentures are removable and can replace a full set of teeth or a few missing teeth. Full dentures are normally indicated for patients with very few unhealthy teeth remaining. These require the remaining teeth to be extracted prior to designing and fitting the denture. With full dentures, you can choose the tooth shade, shape, and size, as well as the color of gum tissue that best suits your facial features.
Partial dentures are used when there are several missing teeth in the lower and/or upper jaw. Removable partial dentures have artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base.
Denture Stabilization and Fixed Dentures:
Fixed dentures are supported by dental implants. They are fixed in place, and there is no chance of slipping or moving.
